HELP- Can I add fresh food scraps to my worm bin?

by Jayshhu
(India)

Hi there, recently I have started(newbie) vermicomposting in a 5-gallon DIY bin with a pound of worms and added semi-done (cooled down!) kitchen compost to it. I couldn't get it whether they were munching on their feed or just hanging on top of the bin. All I want to ask you is how do I check if I should add more kitchen compost?? Is it a good idea to feed worms with semi-done compost??? Should I also add fresh fruit scraps to the bin??

Hello Jayshhu,

congratulations on starting a worm bin. When it comes to worm food the basic rule is that compost worms will feed on nearly anything that once was alive and is now dead.

So your kitchen compost is quite a good food source for them. So are many kinds of fruits and fruit scraps. I suggest you have a look at some of our articles on worm-composting-help.com to find out more about feeding your worms.
